got back to working on this piece after stopping for about to work on other stuff like proposal writing and research.

and i finally plucked up the courage to add in the missing element- in the original photo, the 5-year old me was holding a knitted dog tissue box cover- a peter and jane ladybird book! the decision was made after a very long time. i couldn't find any toy to replace it that was very Peranakan looking, so i thought the book would be good as a representation of Eglish education in schools, which results in a drift in spoken mother tongue, which for the Peranakans in Singapore, is the Baba Malay.

dont have a title for this but anyway, this illustrates a comparison between the old and the young nyonyas. Whilst her great grandmother is still in her daily wear- the baju panjang, the little nyonya fails to wear the traditional attire and has adopted modern outfits as such. she is also carrying a book, which is a symbol of english education.

what is yet to come in the picture : detail of the baju panjang , batik cina sarong , rosary to represent influences from the west-christianity.

finally going back to my bed covered in flowers and clothes spewed all over.

oh, and i smacked this mozzie but its still alive.
