it was nice meeting you Cathia!
check out her BA grad show exhibition here
Cathia studies in Switzerland and is one of the selected students to be part of the recent Tropical Lab in Singapore. She will be taking off tomorrow and pornshirts took her to studioland to chill before heading back to the hostel. We had a really good conversation, Lye, Pornshirts, Cathia and I, and Leah joined in halfway. We compared how our art school education system differed and it was pretty much similar in some way for instance, guiding students to be more conceptual and how the design faculty despises fine arts.
However their school rules are pretty strict. Their studios close pretty early and there's no way of bending the rules. Then , essays are all in french, even she struggles in the impromptu essays in written french despite it being her first language. Assessment gradings are very scary too, being graded 1-6 with 6 being the highest score by a panel of jury members from famous galleries, a famous artist, a popular art magazine director (not sure if i remembered it right). . . and they have to be there to present their work to the panel along with the director of their school(who grades them as well). And the panel was harsh. At least they were present to defend their works, coz we can't when the external validators arrive.
What surprised me most was that her lecturers, create Op Art in their professional practice. The students are very much influenced by their style and get drawn into creating Op Art as well (which is not very different). So according to Cathia, in Switzerland, she doesn't really understand the fascination with Op Art. These are the works by her lecturers, all four of them producing very similar works. After viewing them, i got her point.
